[update] Lessons on the Internet, by Vanessa Martins and Tony Alexandre

9. If teachers put all their lessons on the Internet, students will learn more.

We don't think so because on the net students are likely to not pay much attention than in the classroom because they have a lot of things to access and to distract them.

[update] Clauses and consequences - a comment - by Tatiana

Hello, everyone (:

That's the third question proposed by the book:
#3. If people work only four days a week, their lives will improve.

Well, it depends on factors of many orders. For example: as I see, one more day on the weekend means one more day of rest, but also one more day of expenses (on a weekend we generally spend money with parties, movies, small trips, drinks, food out of home, etc). It means, by consequence, one day less of earning money. I know, it's a very materialistic view of the thing, but it's just an example (and a very pertinent one!).
Anyway, it all depends, of course, on the way you live and face your life. If your job is a cause of worry, anxiety or even unhappiness, there's no one more day of rest on weekends which could make your four days left happier.

[update] PROVERB, BY LAURA

EVERYTHING COMES TO HIM WHO WAITS

I like this proverb, because sometimes in our lives, when we think that we won't get where we want, we shouldn't ever give up our goals because only with patience and determination we'll be able to achieve them.

Dialogue:
Lisa: I'm so happy, ana!
Ana:Why?
Lisa:I worked for many years to buy this car.
Ana: As the old saying goes,'' everything comes to him who waits''.

[update] Proverb, by Jose Augusto

Hello, folks! Here´s the proverb I´d like to share with you guys. I took it from English.com which is an awesome website where you can find proverbs, idioms and much more. If you haven´t been there yet, believe me, you´re missing out. Therefore, I encourage you to go there and check it out.
"Actions speak louder than words" means that your actions (what you do) communicate more clearly than your words (what you say). It is as if they were louder than words. Example: "Don't tell me how to do this; show me! Actions speak louder than words."
"Actions speak louder than words" means that if you want people to believe your words, you should "speak" with your actions.

[update] Consider the consequences, by Shey and Raphinha

If the cities provide free public transportation, there will be fewer cars on the road and less pollution.
Shey’s opinion:
It depends. If the public transportation got better maybe people wouldn’t wish to have a car, because it’ll be cheaper and more comfortable to go from a place to other. However there will be advertisements about cars, they’ll show to people how comfortable, successful would be keep having a car, so the fleet car is be able to keep increasing.
Raphinha’s opinion:
I agree with the main sentence and disagree with Shey. I think if public transportation was good enough to provide to population an efficient transportation, there would be fewer cars on the streets, because it’d be cheaper and faster go from a place to other by bus, for that way the traffic would be smaller than it use to be. We know the big number of cars ion streets brings about a lot of traffic , so with fewer cars on the streets the traffic would be smaller, because more and more people would be in the buses rather than in the cars. So would be more comfortable to travel by bus from a certain point of view.
Besides there wolud have less polution, because with fewer cars on the streets there would be less emission of  gas.
So go by bus!!!

[update] Proverbs; by Marielle

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
When we think that all we’ve done is lost because it didn’t happen how we expected, we can’t lose hope. I mean, even if you have came through difficult situations in your life and it seems like you’re banging your head against the wall because you haven’t had the expected reward, you must hang in there and wait because you’ll have other opportunities to achieve your goals. Sometimes  your life does not work out the way you dream,  so you’d be better advised in setting your eyes on  other “doors” around you so that when you get frustrated  with something, you can dream about another one.
There are ups and downs in life and we are guided in different ways and  it’s up to us to choose our own way ( the right one) …just look with faith, and wait! Wait, but know how to do it… it’s the never-ending  hope.  Look carefully and hopefully at the new doors which show up in your life, and be happy!!  ^^

[update] April fool's day, by Marielle

April Fool’s Day!
April Fool’s day is a day when people play some tricks on each other. This is a funny day because most of these tricks are kind of “healthy” and we can tell little lies to our friends, parents, relatives and other people, but, sometimes, some people go too far with these lies. A friend of mine, for example, once told his sister who was at school that their mother was calling her to go home and she really needed talk to the girl, but the school was very far away from their house, but anyway, the girl went there on foot and walked around 30 minutes. She arrived home tired and a little nervous because she thought her mother had a problem. When she realized that it was a trick she got very angry with her brother and gave him a piece of her mind. Also, other people take advantage of this day to practice evil and tell lies which aren’t funny anyway, but they are  the minority.
According to history, until 1564, in France, the first day of the year was celebrated on April 1st. In that year, King Carlos IX decided to adopt the Gregorian calendar which celebrates the New Year on January 1st.
Just for fun, people kept saying “Happy New Year” for each other on April 1st, a day which turned out to be considered the “Fool’s day”.

[update] Proverbs, by Shey

Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.

Sometimes we believe in the reliable people that have good appearance or like polite, but in some situations these people show us how they are truly and this let us down.
Dialogue
Bob: I’m so disappointed with coworker.
Peter: What happened?
Bob: She like a good person, she always polite so I thought she was a reliable person and I told her about a project that I wanted to show to my boss because I’m working hard to get a promotion. So she said me it needed some repairs and asked me did this, how I thought she was reliable person I agree with her and gave my project to her. So she shows my project to our boss how it was her and she got my promotion.
Peter: That’s awful but the proverb says beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.

[update] Proverbs, by Raphinha

Hi folks,
A blessing in disguise
When something bad happens to someone and despite it brings about a good thing.
I agree with it, because sometimes bad things that happens to you can bring you good results, good things. As it says a good thing comes in disguise of something apparently bad sometimes. I think it means that you should not get despaired when something bad happens to you, because maybe this is not a bad thing but a good thing in spite of not having happened the way you want it to be.
Dialogue:
A: Oh Mom, I cannot believe I have not been called to that job. I am perfect to that vacancy.
B: I know you are, my son. But look at the bright side. That job was not good enough to you. There you would have to work more than 10 hours a day and you would not receive a good payment. Add to that working for so much time would impair you in school.
A: Yes mom, you are right, maybe not getting that job was a blessing in disguise.

[update] Proverbs, by Tatiana

Hello, everybody.
I've chosen this proverb:

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained."
I think its idea and "No pain, no gain" are kind of alike. I totally agree with this idea and I've chosen this one because I am on a special phasis of my life, and I have to do some choices and go through their consequences, such as taking risks and some pain. But I sincerely believe I'm on the right way to a new "me" - hahaha
I think this pic is kinda unreal (I've never been sure if the shark was really there or if it was a photoshop art), but, whatever, it serves to illustrate how dangerous or exciting can be running risks.
Look at this dialogue:
Me: Look at that! Isn't it Henrique? You might go to talk to him!
Denise: I can't do this, I'm so ashamed!
Me: You cand handle this. Nothing ventured, nothing gain, they say.
I hope you have liked!

Hugs,
Tatiana.

[update] Are you in love?

Are you in love?
How do you find out that someone is in love? What are the symptoms?
Well, based on my own experience I can say that in a way every person has a different reaction when they find themselves in love with someone else. However, there are some symptoms which are common to all of them. Let´s have a look at some of those symptoms.
The first sign that indicates you are in love with someone else is when you can´t stop thinking about them. Wherever you are, at work, home or even on your way back from work you can´t get this person out of your mind.
The second symptom is that you always want this person around, I mean, you want to be with this person all the time. And when you´re not able to keep this person company for so long you try to call them whenever you can. Love is beautiful, isn´t it?
Now, there´s one more symptom which is worth mentioning that is when you dream about this person. This is, I would say, the most accurate of the other symptoms mentioned above. It can indicate whether you are really in love with someone or not. So if you keep dreaming about one particular person you´re probably in love with this person. And if you feel all of those symptoms talked about above, here´s my piece of advice: call the person you think you´re in love with and ask them to have a word with them personally and when you are face to face with this person, tell them how you feel. Take a chance. Don´t be afraid of opening your heart to them or else you´ll live the rest of your life regretting not having even tried it.

[update] Proverb

Why study proverbs in English ? Proverbs, short sayings that are generally known by many people and usually contains words of wisdom, truth or morals that are based on common sense or practical experience, are part of everyday language. We studied some of them in our last two classes. Now I´d like you to give your own contribution with a proverb of your preference.
In this task you are supposed to do the following things:
a) pick out a proverb you like , explain in English what it means
b) say if you agree or disagree with it.
c) choose a picture to represent it, as I have done in my classes
d) make up a small dialogue where the proverb is used in an appropriate context. e.g..
Birds of a feather flock together = Similar people tend to associate with each other
Agree: I think this is correct. People with similar interests tend tospend time with others of the same interest.
Context
A: I saw the boy who stole my bag with that gang of trouble maker last night.
B Well, I saw it coming ( dava pra se prever) birds of a feather flock together, they say.
OR disagree in whole or in part with it. e.g.
B: As a general rule of thumb, (como regra geral) absolutely com certeza)./ Not always. Most of my life my friends were different from me in many ways and we had a great connection. Yes, we had some similar beliefs, of course, but we still have our differences.

[update] Proverb

Hello, folks! The proverb I´d like to share with you guys is a well-known one. Check it out! I hope you´ll like it. (jose augusto) "curiosity killed the cat" Curiosity killed the cat reminds us that being too curious can be dangerous. Example: "What do you think is down that dark street?" Reply: "I would rather not find out. Curiosity killed the cat." Curiosity killed the cat recalls a story in which "the cat" was killed because he was too curious and followed "curiosity" too far. Example: "That reporter has been asking a lot of questions and the boss doesn't like it." Reply: "Curiosity killed the cat." Cats are curious animals that like to investigate, but their curiosity can take them places where they might get hurt. Children especially, like cats, are curious and like to test to find out what is dangerous. Example: "My son stuck his finger into the electrical outlet and got a huge shock! He said he wanted to find out how it would feel." Reply: "It's a good thing he wasn't hurt! Curiosity killed the cat."

[update] Proverb, by José

One swallow doesn't make a summer ( uma andorinha só não faz verão)

I've chosen this proverb 'cause I  think it is true. When it says that it's very hard for a person to do something without anyone's  help  it's because one need to join a group to do a certain  action . Another reason for me choose it, is because I listen to it all the time in my neigborhood.

[update] The wedding ceremony in India

the wedding ceremony in India is completely different from the wedding ceremony here in BBrazil at the Hindu ceremony the bride does everything to make sureher wedding day is a lucky one. The Hindu bride looks for a holy man to study her own horoscope as well as the groom's to choose the right day for the wedding, so that mariage will be long and happy. After checking all the signs very carefully,he chooses the wedding day.
The weeks of preparation and excitement are common in both cultures. On the weeding day itself, before helping her get dressed, the bride's sisters and female friends paint her hands and feet with henna. After that, she puts on a red sari, the color wich will bring her good luck in mariage. During the ceremony. the groom's relatives place a small mark of red paste on her forehead to show she is a married woman. After decoreting the bride with jewels, the groom and his relatives cover her face with a veil. During the reception the guest enjoy a feast of food and drink, while the bride and groom sit together and share their meals and the reception continues for one or two weeks depending of the bride's family finaces.

[update] São João

On June 24th, Brazilian families celebrate São João. It is a day when people make fires and set fireworks off. In general, elderly people stay at home and eat typical foods like corn, canjica, mungunzá and amendoim. The youngest ones usually go with friends to concerts in the city or at the countryside organized by the government. The children usually get dressed up as caipiras, which is the use of checked or plaid shirts (and) along with patched pants for boys, and cute checked dresses for girls.
Some streets are decorated by their own residents; they usually make one “arraial”, which is a place with colored flags and straw roofing to shelter them and their food from the rain. In some arraiás built in concert houses, there are contests among groups of typical dance like xote, xaxado and baião, we call “quadrilhas”. Everything is considered on these contests, from clothing to the choreography and many winner groups travel to another state to present and run for the best position.

[update] Wiccan Wedding, by Rafinha

As far as Miss Lima suggested us to make a description of a wedding celebration, I decided to describe a different kind of wedding. I will to talk about a Wiccan wedding, that is, a wedding celebration of an old religion, which is still followed by many people around the world.
This is a ritual of compromising based on a spiritual liaison, it is not legal.
Before the ceremony the whole place, where it will be realized should be consecrated with salt, water and any kind of purifying incense.
The high priestess traces a circle with a sword around all the guests and blesses all of them with sacred words and then a bell is rung.
The bride and the groom enter the circle with tied hands. They keep in front of the altar and the guests keep in the perimeter of the circle shaking their.
So the priestess says: “In this sacred circle of Light we get together in perfect love and perfect truth, Oh Goddess of divine love, I beg thou to bless this couple and their love and their marriage for the whole time they live together. Give them a healthful life full of joy, love, stability and fertility.”
So the priestess takes a plate with salt or earth for they to put their right hands over it while she says: “Blessed be by the old and mystic element earth, Oh Goddess of Love on all thy glory give them love, tenderness, happiness and compassion for all the time they live together.
The priestess puts the plate on the altar and the couple turns to the East. She rings the bell three times and burn next to them the incense and says: “Blessed be by the smoke and for the bell, symbols of the old and mystic element air.” She puts the incense on the altar and the couple turn to South. Each of them takes a candle with their right hand. The candles are lighted up and the High priestess takes a cane and says: “ Blessed be by the cane and the flame, symbols of the old and mystic element fire. May Goddess on thy love and all thy glory give them harmony, vitality, creativity and passion for all the time they both live".
The couple turn to West. The priestess takes the calyx with water and drops it over them saying: “Blessed be by the old and mystic element water. May Goddess on all thy love and glory bless them with friendship, kindness and the comprehension for all the time they live together.”
The Priestess anoints their forehead with rose oil and holds a quartz over them as a symbol of the spiritual reign as she says: May Goddess of love on all thy glory bless them with the union, honesty and spiritual development for all their lives and the magician of their love keep growing during all the time they live together, because their wedding is a sacred union of the feminine and the masculine of the Divinity.”
The priestess puts the crystal on the altar and consecrated the wedding rings with salt and water, as she says: “For the salt and the water I purify and clean this beautiful symbols of love. I beg all the negatives vibes, impurities and obstacles be taken away from here and everything is good, kind and positive get in. Blessed be this wedding rings under the divine name of the Goddess. So be it!"
The groom puts the ring on bride’s finger and so she does the same. They say their promises and the priestess consecrates a white strings. So the couple hold it side by side and make a knot on it while they express their love for each other. The priestess says: “By this knots in this string be your love joined.” So she tied their hands with the strings. So all the guests sing: “Love! Love! Love!”
So everyone keeps quiet for a while and the priestess untie their hands and says: "By the Goddess’s power and the power of her spouse I declare you husband and wife during all the time you both live. May you live always together in love. So be it.”
The guests, the couple and the priestess thank the Goddess and the God and the priestess undo the circle.
A broom is put horizontally on the ground and couple jump over it together. So all drink wine and eat a special cake cut with the sword of the ceremony.

[update] Christmas

Christmas always makes people more caring and united. At Christmas, everyone meets at my house and divide the tasks. Usually I´m responsible for preparing the desserts. I love to set up the Christmas tree. My cousin Karen, 8 years old, always helps me. The Christmas songs fascinate me. At night the whole family gets together and start the bingo, that´s the fun part. Presents prices are R$ 1,99, but everybody wants to win one! After the bingo, we start the exchange of gifts and messages. Each one has to take a message to their secret friend- that part is exciting, and almost always we all cry. Finally, at midnight all of us hug one another and say "Merry Christmas!" Then, we sit at the table and begin to dine. I hope the next Christmas celebration at home will be different because every year, before starting the exchange of gifts, we already know who our secret friend is.

[update] commentaries about the last class

In the last class the  teacher introduced for her students the topic called  "relative clauses of time" that is a short information inside the phrase. For instance in the sentence" Thanksgiving is a day when North Americans celebrate the harvest, we have "a day when..." like the relative clause because it brings a new information about the sentence.
She  also talked about the adverbial clauses , that indicates time. These adverbs can be termed as Adverb Clause of Time.
These clauses begin with conjunctions such as whenever, while, after, before, since, when, as, as soon as,  till, etc…
When you have finished your work, you may go home.
In this sentence, the clause ‘when you have finished your work’ indicated the time when you may go home.
• I will do it when I think fit.
In this sentence, the clause ‘when I think fit’ is indicating the time for me to do the work.
